Environment Analyst

The analysts will rotate within AIIB’s investment operations to gain experience in identifying, preparing, and monitoring investment projects for public and private sector clients.  

About the role:

The Operational Services Department (OSD) of AIIB’s Investment Operations is responsible for the provision of fiduciary services aimed at ensuring the high quality of each project financed by the Bank and strong compliance with AIIB’s operational policies. It supports two Vice Presidencies, Investment Operations (VP IOs) by assigning specialists in the environmental, social, procurement and financial management areas and oversees the effective implementation of AIIB’s operational policies in the realization of AIIB’s commitment to sustainable development. 

The Environment Analyst (Graduate Program) will support environmental due diligence of AIIB’s projects and integrating environmental dimensions in the development of sustainable infrastructure. The position involves activities to support the appraisal and monitoring of the environmental risks and impacts associated with investment projects against the requirements of AIIB’s Environmental and Social Framework (ESF).  

Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Support AIIB’s due diligence on the environmental aspects of projects, conduct desk studies to assess the environmental and social (ES) feasibility of AIIB’s projects.  

  • Participate in the screening of the projects for potential environmental and climate change-related risks and impacts and propose the ES category for the project. 

  • Conduct studies on country systems and regulations of environmental issues. 

  • Support the appraisal of the environmental risks and impacts associated with investment projects against the requirements of AIIB's Environmental and Social Framework ESF). 

  • Support the review of Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA) and Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMP) prepared by clients. 

  • Monitor implementation of ES aspects of the project and project compliance with AIIB's environmental requirements for low-risk projects, and address any issues that may arise during project implementation, including any changes in project design or scope.  

  • Support the preparation and review of AIIB’s internal documents associated with projects. 

  • Support the organization of training on environmental safeguard systems for AIIB staff and clients; and contribute to AIIB’s knowledge base on environmental and social aspects, particularly related to climate change, biodiversity and ecosystem services, and emerging ESG frameworks. 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in environmental science, environmental planning, engineering, policy or management. 

  • 2-3 years (for Bachelor’s degree) or 1-2 years (for Master’s degree) of relevant experience doing research or working in environmental-related research institutes/universities, NGOs or consulting firms preferred. 

  • High levels of competency in quantitative and qualitative research methods. 

  • Knowledge of one or more areas of environmental modelling, e.g., models for air dispersion and noise.   

  • Experience working in developing countries a plus. 

  • Good team player with strong initiative. 

  • Proficient in oral and written communication skills in English.
