The Role

At Last Mile Health (LMH), we make bold commitments that inspire innovation. Do you have project management skills and experience in implementing digital systems for Community Health Workers? If so, you may be the perfect fit for the Manager, Global Digital Health role in Malawi.

Reporting to the Director, Digital Health Strategy, the Manager, Global Digital Health position sits on the Global Digital Health Team, which is part of LMH’s Health Systems Strengthening Team (HSS). The Manager, Global Digital position is an integral part of the Global Digital Health Team, which operates within LMH's Health Systems Strengthening Team (HSS). The HSS team serves as a central hub, providing technical assistance to digital health programs, teams, and governments in the respective countries.

This position is based at LMH's Lilongwe Office to focus direct support to Malawi's digital health initiatives, while also catering to the requirements of other global Digital Health teams. The Manager, Global Digital Health will leverage their expertise in public health and digital health to support in-country teams, facilitate efficient project documentation and knowledge management, bridge in-country Digital Health teams with global technical and strategic services, contribute to the development of global strategies and processes, and establish internal systems for the design, implementation, and management of LMH's digital health interventions across multiple geographic regions. 

This role is based in Lilongwe, Malawi and is open to candidates who are located in and have work authorization in Malawi. 

What you'll do

Technical Assistance to Malawi Digital Health Interventions

  • Bridge HSS Technical Assistance to Integrated Community Health Information System (iCHIS) by acting as a liaison between other global Digital Health (DH) team members, and acting as a bridge to the broader HSS team to communicate priority requests from Malawi. 
  • Provide direct technical assistance to the Malawi DH team by connecting your own and the HSS team’s experience to drive improvements in iCHIS. 
  • Lead the exchange of global/LMH digital health knowledge with the Malawi DH team and facilitate their engagement with more technical or strategy-focused LMH team members. 
  • Provide document drafting support, and technical review of iCHIS documentation such as training materials and or interpreting data for the iCHIS Monitoring & Evaluation(M&E) Plan. 
  • Tailor Global Processes and Systems for the iCHIS activity. 
  • Leverage global best practices, existing HSS processes, and tools/practices from other LMH geographies to improve upon the tools/practices for iCHIS. Work with the Malawi team to tailor these tools for their needs (ie. customizing a deployment checklist from another geography for iCHIS or helping the Malawi team adapt a global budget tracker template for iCHIS. 
  • Communicate Malawi/iCHIS needs to improve upon global HSS processes).

Technical Assistance to Ethiopia, Liberia, Malawi, Sierra Leone Digital Health Interventions 

  • Provide expert technical assistance to Digital Health projects in Ethiopia, Liberia, and Sierra Leone through regular weekly check-ins and special requests for the global team's support. 
  • Utilize your experience, expertise, and thought leadership to help teams overcome challenges and enhance the sustainability and quality of our Digital Health initiatives.
  • Contribute global and LMH digital health knowledge with the Digital Health teams and facilitate their engagement with technical and strategic DH team members.
  • Review, provide feedback, and offer recommendations regarding their digital health work, while connecting team members with relevant briefs, documents, and global best practices.
  • Establish efficient processes and systems for Digital Health activities across multiple geographies. 
  • Collaborate with country teams to understand their specific system needs, such as hardware procurement, device setup and training, software modifications, and more. 
  • Support the teams in designing best practice systems that ensure the sustainable management of their respective areas of work. Work alongside the DH Director and other global team members to design, develop, and implement these tools. 
  • Assist the management of MEL Plans. Bridge HSS expertise to in-country Digital Health Managers and the MERL team to provide inputs into the development, implementation, and iteration of Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) plans across all of LMH’s digital health activities.
  • Support coordination across teams to ensure all DH KPIs are reported monthly/quarterly. 
  • Contribute to the interpretation and narration of data results across MEL plans.
  • Support DH File & Knowledge Management across in-country programs. 
  • Work closely with DH management and Program Management of in-country teams to ensure up-to-date information within their Activity Hub. 
  • Collaborate to maintain accurate and relevant data, supporting file management on Google Drive, and promoting effective knowledge management using Slite

HSS DH Management, Strategy, Partnerships, & Systems

  • Lead and facilitate LMH's DH Advisory Committee. These are regular internal meetings across national DH team members to exchange experiences, ambitions, and practices across geographies and teams. Set agenda and lead communications for regular monthly internal meetings. Work with the HSS DH Director to invite quarterly external guests and share updates across the organization. 
  • Serve as the key collaborator during the development of HSS/Global-level Strategic documentation that effectively communicates LMH's global DH strategy, technical processes, and updates on cross-country digital health work across all staff members. 
  • Independently schedule sessions with key DH stakeholders to collect quarterly feedback on the strategy, and collaborate on drafting iterations of the documents to ensure clarity and alignment.
  • Support DH File & Knowledge Management by working with the DH Director to organize DH reports and technical documentation in the Global DH Drive and Slite, ensuring easy access for in-country teams and supporting information organization and version control.
  • Develop global reports to external DH stakeholders (partners, vendors, donors) on project updates and software improvements. Offer technical feedback to HSS and Partnerships & Communication Team (P&C) on new digital health business opportunities. 
  • Support the HSS DH Director to coordinate with external hardware/software vendors around planning, contracting, and billing; explore potential non-profit partnerships; and plan projects with LMH’s P&C team.
  • Interface with Global Technical Working Groups. 
  • Collaborate with MERL team members to develop, implement, and iterate on M&E plans across all of LMH’s digital health activities. 
  • Work with the supervisor to attend digital health conferences, and to stay up-to-date with the latest literature and emerging trends in the field. 
  • Manage a catalog of relevant Digital Health literature and resources, and share key findings with stakeholders.

What you'll bring

  • Bachelor’s degree or above in a relevant field, such as Computer Science, International Development, Public Health, or relevant work experience.
  • Relevant years of work experience in project management, including project coordination, and budget management.
  • Relevant years of work experience with digital projects in Low-Middle Income Countries (LMIC). 
  • Familiarity with popular open source software for health in LMICs such as ODK, CommCare, OpenSRP, and DHIS2.
  • Project Management in Public Health/LMIC settings with a strong preference for project management experience within a LMIC. 
  • Experience implementing Digital Systems for Community Health Workers(CHW) ideally within a remote or African context. Any experience with technologies for CHWs is desirable. 
  • Experience in navigating complex partnership landscape with government, donors, non-profits, academic institutions, and technology firms. Ideally around large-scale technology initiatives in low resource environments. 
  • Experience and familiarity in software management, requirements gathering, quality assurance testing, and user centered design.
  • Demonstrated experience in improving project management tools and techniques to contribute to the management and optimization of multiple project teams.
  • Excellent leadership, communication (written, verbal and presentation) and interpersonal skills with a particular emphasis on cross-cultural and cross-departmental communication
  • Experience in developing project reports including the tracking project budgets against timelines and the project’s status against key milestones. Ability to maintain relationships by engaging stakeholders to establish credibility, solve problems, build consensus and achieve objectives.

For Malawi, the range is an annual gross of $23,582- $44,543 USD dependent upon experience doing an equivalent role. Please note that compensation is subject to Malawian taxes.
