Contract Duration

Interns are required to work full time for a period between three and six months (to be agreed to prior to commencement). Preference will be given to candidates who are available for six months. Internship placements shall not be extended beyond six months. 

The Opportunity

The International Criminal Court (ICC) investigates and, where warranted, tries individual charges with the gravest crimes of concerns to the international community: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and crime of aggression. The Court is participating in the global fight to end impunity, and through the international criminal justice, the Court aims to hold those responsible accountable for their crimes and to help prevent the crimes from happening again. You can contribute to this cause by joining the ICC.

Organisational Context

The Office of the Prosecutor investigates and prosecutes genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes committed by nationals of a State Party or on the territory of a State Party on or after 1 July 2002, the date of entry into force of the Rome Statute.

The Evidence and Discovery Management Unit (EDMU), located within the Information, Knowledge, Evidence Management Section (IKEMS) of the Office of the Prosecutor, is responsible for all aspects of managing, processing and handling evidence collected during the course of the Office’s investigations. Additionally, EDMU is responsible for handling correspondence received under article 15 of the Rome Statue.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the reception, registration, acknowledgement, processing and archiving of communications received by the Office of the Prosecutor under article 14 and article 15 of the Rome Statute, as well as referrals of situations from State Parties, or from the United Nations Security Council.
  • Conduct an initial review (Phase I) of communications and referrals under art.15 of the Rome Statute.
  • Assist in the processing of material related to situations under preliminary examination; and update records in the evidence database.
  • Provide assistance in the video recording of OTP guest lectures, OTP advocacy training and legal forum meetings.
  • Perform specific tasks and assist in research as required by the Head of the Unit.

Required Qualifications

Education:

All Candidates must have a degree or be in the final stages of their studies at a recognised university, either at bachelor or higher levels. The degree should be related to one of the following or similar areas: information or data management,  technology, computing, data science or business analytics. Candidates are expected to have a very good record of academic performance.

Experience:

Internship placements focus on candidates in the early stages of their professional careers therefore; practical experience is not an essential prerequisite for selection. However, programming or coding experience will be considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Able to adapt to multicultural and multilingual working environments.
  • Possesses strong teamwork skills (listens, consults and communicates proactively).
  • High standard of computer skills (including Microsoft Office applications).

Knowledge of Languages:

Proficiency in one of the working languages of the Court, French or English, is required. Working knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another official language of the Court (Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Spanish) or of German is an asset. Applicants with a working knowledge of Ukrainian, Russian or Arabic are strongly encouraged to apply.

Remuneration

Please note that the ICC is not able to provide participants in the Internship Programme with remuneration, nor is it possible to provide any reimbursement for any expenses incurred during the internship. Accordingly, applicants must have the necessary resources or other financial support for the duration of the internship for which they have been selected.
