Description
Gateway Operations Engineer reporting to the ISS Operations Team (HRE-OO) Leader, providing an operations preparation and implementation service to the Gateway Operations Lead (HRE-L), assigned as integrated support from the Solar System and Exploration Missions Division, Mission Operations Department, Directorate of Operations.
In this role, you will focus on projects implementing the evolution of ISS operations and defining the operational and integration processes and preparatory activities of the ESA Gateway elements. As Gateway Operations Engineer, you will be fully functionally assigned to the Gateway Operations Lead.
The duty station of the post will be the Human Exploration Control Centre (HECC) at Oberpfaffenhofen in Munich, with a resident assignment at ESTEC in Noordwijk during the Gateway operations preparation phase. The duration of the resident assignment will be two years, which may be extended based on project requirements.
Duties
Your tasks and responsibilities will include:
- supporting the coordination of the day-to-day Lunar Gateway operations preparatory activities and technical matters, providing an operations preparation service to the Gateway Operations Lead;
- conducting, managing and implementing operations preparation and validation activities for the ESA Gateway elements, such as HLCS, ESA payloads, I-Hab and the ERM module, and supporting preparation of the element-sustaining and utilisation phase;
- implementing the Gateway operations integration activities required for operations preparation activities, the launch of the ESA elements and the sustaining phase of the ESA Gateway elements. This includes participation in Gateway programme integration and utilisation working groups, panels and boards;
- supporting the set-up and definition of the Gateway operational ground segment for the Human Exploration Control Centre by supporting the evolution of the Columbus Control Centre (Col-CC) ground segment for Gateway operations. This includes support to simulator or monitoring control system requirements definition, verification and validation of operations products;
- coordinating support to the ESA Gateway Operations and Engineering Control Panel (OECP) and supporting its meetings and sub-panels as defined in the OECP charter;
- developing and maintaining ESA Gateway integration and operations processes as required in order to implement preparatory activities within ESA and in cooperation with the international partners, such as NASA and JAXA;
- supporting the management and implementation of HRE-OO hold contracts with operations centres and expert industry in terms of proposal evaluation, change request definition and implementation monitoring;
- building system-level knowledge across the entire Gateway environment and range of elements and using this knowledge to act as a system and subsystem operations expert, advising on and guiding new projects from development through to operations through active participation in the various ESA and Gateway review processes.
You will also participate in periodic meetings with the parent Division, contributing to the transfer of technical knowledge and lessons learned across the Agency.

A master’s degree in an engineering discipline is required for this post.
Additional requirements
Experience with ISS or Gateway operations and a good understanding of ISS processes and culture, as well as the relationships between its international partners, is highly desirable.
Knowledge of the basic principles of ISS operations or several years of experience of ISS operations or operations integration would be an asset.

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
