The Infrastructure and Facilities Management Service (CSLI) within the Logistics Services Division (CSL) is responsible for the maintenance of the headquarters' premises and for providing services to FAO employees. CSLI also assists FAO Decentralized Offices in facilities maintenance, technical projects, infrastructure activities and technical innovative systems to reduce their carbon footprint. Furthermore, it promotes the implementation of the Corporate Environmental Responsibility Strategy within headquarters and Decentralized Offices.

The post is located in the Facilities Management Service (CSLI) within the Logistics Services Division (CSL) at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.

Reporting Lines
The Corporate Environmental Officer reports to the Senior Facilities Management Officer/Head of CSLI.

Technical Focus
Support the implementation of FAO's Corporate Environmental Responsibility (CER) Strategy workplan at headquarters and Decentralized Offices.

Key Results

Develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate assigned programmes/projects.

Key Functions
• Carries out basic research on selected aspects of programmes, operations and other activities; collects, analyses and presents statistical data and other information gathered from diverse sources;
• Provides substantive support for policy coordination and evaluation functions, including the review and analysis of emerging development issues and trends, participation in impact evaluation or equivalent studies;
• Participates in survey initiatives; issues data collection tools, reviews, analyses and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares preliminary conclusions;
• Contributes to the preparation of various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications;
• Undertakes outreach activities; participates in the development of training workshops, seminars; participates in and makes presentations on assigned topics/activities;
• - Participates in field missions, including provision of substantive and administrative/technical support, data collection, etc.

Specific Functions
• Supports the coordination and implementation of the FAO's Corporate Environmental Responsibility Strategy;
• Organizes the Working Group bi-annual meetings and ad-hoc meetings ensuring the participation of concerned centres/divisions/offices including Decentralized Offices;
• Assists in the development of CSLI workplans as well as headquarters' units and regional workplans and activities breakdown;
• Reports and monitors the strategy implementation, according to the defined workplans;
• Contributes to and supports sustainability initiatives belonging to CSLI/facilities to meet the targets set by the FAO Corporate Environmental Responsibility Strategy;
• Provides technical assistance to Decentralized Offices on energy issues and other corporate sustainability activities;
• Assists in implementing projects for energy stabilization in Decentralized Offices, including gathering data required for solar systems and hybrid systems;
• Collaborates with other centres/divisions/offices on resolving these energy issues in Decentralized Offices including Digitalization and Informatics (CSI) and Security Services (CSLS);
• Reviews design documentation for solar systems for Decentralized Offices;
• Reviews electrical and mechanical systems of field projects;
• Contributes to the development of solutions for reducing energy consumption and use; through research, design, documentation, and calculations recommend implementation of green solutions, cutting down environmental impact and cost;
• Acts as focal point between the CER team and the Information Technology Management (ITM) Green Energy team in United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to facilitate the solar systems and any other energy saving implementation;
• Organizes the collection of greenhouse gas (GHG) data within headquarters and Decentralized Offices;
• Performs data analysis and coordinates data submission to Sustainable United Nations (SUN)/United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP);
• Supports the coordination of the annual CER reports, newsletter and any other communication material;
• Supports the Green Champions network;
• Coordinates the development of the Environmental Management System (EMS) in selected Decentralized Offices;
• Performs other duties as required.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements
• Advanced university degree in electrical or energy engineering.
• Three years of relevant experience in implementation of energy saving projects.
• Working knowledge (proficient – level C) of English and limited knowledge (intermediate – level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).

Technical/Functional Skills
• Ability to manage, understand and analyse large amount of data related to energy and environment including GHG emissions.
• Extent and relevance of experience in the field of the Corporate Environmental Responsibility.
• Extent and relevance of experience in implementing energy saving projects and solar systems.
• Ability to write reports and communication documents in English within the environmental sector.
• Prior experience in working within the UN system is considered a strong asset.
• Working knowledge (proficient - level C) of Italian is an asset.
• Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions.
