Mission and objectives
The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that supports human development globally by promoting volunteerism and by mobilizing volunteers. It is administered by UNDP and operates amidst growing recognition that volunteerism makes important contributions, economically and socially, to more cohesive societies by building trust and reciprocity among citizens.UNV Regional Office for the Arab States (ROAS) provides oversight and strategic guidance to the UNV Field Units in their respective geographical assignments and is mainly accountable for the placement of UN Volunteers mobilized for UN Agencies, Funds, and Programmes focused on peace, development and humanitarian needs. Furthermore, ROAS represents and strategically positions UNV in the region, bringing UNV’s services and solutions closer to its partners from governments, UN entities, civil society, and the private sector. The Regional Office also leads to scoping and delivering UNV’s advisory service offer on volunteer infrastructure.
Context
MENA Regional Office actively looks for innovative ways to foster a culture of learning and development, by providing opportunities to enhance staff capacity and strengthen the local talent pipeline. National staff interested in pursuing an international career, may face limited opportunities for professional growth due to lack of international experience. Obtaining international exposure can be a determinant factor to transition from national to international staff categories. Aiming to fill this gap, DHR and MENA and the UNV program are partnering to offer a flexible and innovative solution to national staff to take on international assignments in various programmatic areas, as UN Volunteers. These assignments will equip national staff with international experience and help them prepare for future assignments as international staff. As a matter of fact more than 180 UN Volunteers serve at UNICEF in MENA region, including 40 Internationals. They serve is very diverse profiles both operational and programmatic which can offer wide opportunities for national staff from all job family within UNICEF. This Initiative is a pilot in MENA region targeted National staff from UNICEF MENA to be deployed as International Volunteers in UNICEF Country Offices in the MENA region.
