Result of Service
The services will make available the reports “Adapting to a New climate in the MENA”, “The road to banking decarbonization in the MENA region” and “Mobilizing Islamic Banking for Climate Action” in Arabic so UNEP FI can then disseminate it among its partners and members in the MENA region, and in global fora and through replication of final layout of the original report. The services will ensure high quality of translation, accurately reflecting the meaning found in the original source language (English) and rendering that meaning in the translated work. The services will also make available one document in Arabic: Investor Agenda for Climate Change.

Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The overall objective of the UNEP’s Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities. The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is the strategic partnership between the United Nations and over 450 banks, insurers and investors. For over 28 years UNEP FI has been shaping and driving the international sustainable finance agenda, setting global standards and growing a global network of leading financial institutions. Through its work-streams and regional activities, peer learning, methodology development, training and research, UNEP FI promotes sustainable finance and helps the financial industry align with and contribute to the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals. Purpose: UNEP FI needs a consultant to translate the recently launched reports “Adapting to a New climate in the MENA” and “The road to banking decarbonization in the MENA region” and make it available in Arabic. The reports provide the first in-depth analysis of climate finance practices and pathways from mitigation and adaptation sides in a part of the world most vulnerable to the effects of climate change: the MENA region. The first report addresses the risks of climate change in the MENA region, the resulting economic impacts, and how banks are currently responding to climate risks. With a focus on Egypt and Morocco, it analyzes the current state of adaptation finance and the barriers to scale up finance for adaptation and resilience in the region. The second report discusses the state of banking decarbonisation in the MENA region, looking at the maturity of the policy and regulatory environment on net-zero banking as well as how the banking sector has responded so far. The report includes a series of conceptual frameworks which outline the different areas in which public actors and banks need to take action to accelerate transition towards a net-zero economy as well as a set of recommendations in this regard. The consultant will also be responsible for the translation of one other short documents to Arabic and will be in direct contact with AME Regional Coordinator, and the AME Regional Coordination Associate to discuss the precise scope of work and any specific expectations for the documents to be translated. Objectives: In line with the UNEP FI project document approved by UNEP, and under the direct supervision of the Regional Coordination Manager and the AME Regional Coordinator, the Consultant will carry out the following project tasks for UNEP FI. Specific tasks and responsibilities: For the reports “Adapting to a New climate in the MENA”, “The road to banking decarbonization in the MENA region” and “Mobilizing Islamic Banking for Climate Action”: · Ensure professional translation, proofreading and editing of all text, including figures, boxes, captions, sources and covers. · Perform terminology research and use the correct terms and names consistently throughout the translated text and in cases after consulting with the MENA Regional Coordinator. · Ensure translated report and other documents are complete in final version to submit to design. · Check and correctly quote references to documents already published; - Pay attention to detail at all levels and check for errors (e.g. grammar, syntax, spelling, punctuation, formatting) to ensure the translated text is an accurate, faithful and consistent rendering of the original text. Outputs and Deliverables: · “Adapting to a New climate in the MENA” Arabic version of the report is ready and submitted to design. · “The road to banking decarbonization in the MENA region” Arabic version of the report is ready and submitted to design. · “Mobilizing Islamic Banking for Climate Action” Arabic version of the report is ready and submitted to design. · Investor Agenda for Climate Change in Arabic version ready to submit to design. The consultant will report to the Programme Management Officer, working in close coordination with UNEP FI’s AME Regional Coordinator.
Qualifications/special skills
Academic: An advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent degree) in technical translation, international relations, business, economics and finance, sustainable development or an environmental field. A first-level university degree in combination with seven (7) years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Professional Experience: a Minimum five (5) years of professional experience in translation and editing including interpretation Service. Demonstrated experience in translating professional documents. Past work with UN will be an advantage. Knowledge of UNEP terminology will be considered an advantage Proven experience of translation/interpretation services. Experience working with international development organizations is desirable.
Languages
English is the working language of UNEP FI. Knowledge Arabic is required for this position.
Additional Information
Skills & Knowledge: knowledge of technical translation in multiple sectors such as finance, sustainable development, energy sector, development and economic issues or related fields would be a definite asset. Outstanding translation and editing skills in Arabic and English. Demonstrate effective organizational skills, project management skills, and ability to deliver services in an efficient and timely manner. Proven ability and capacity to deliver translations to meet tight deadlines to complete a project on time. Review of translations prior to delivery should include checking of spelling and grammar, confirming technical accuracy, and verifying overall clarity and fluency in Arabic language.
