Description

Business Application and Partnership Officer, reporting to the Head of the Space Applications Initiatives Section in the Directorate of Commercialisation, Industry and Competitiveness.

 

Reporting to the Head of the Space Applications Initiatives Section, you will be working at the forefront of innovative opportunities in ESA’s Business Applications and Space Solutions. You will be responsible for stimulating the development and deployment of economically viable space-based solutions and services in cooperation with institutions, the private sector and corporate players, and the management of the resulting industrial contracts. 

 

You will work in close cooperation with members of the Directorate of Commercialisation, Industry and Competitiveness and other directorates, as well as with industry and private and public stakeholders  representing the user communities of ESA programmes. 

Duties

Your tasks and responsibilities will include:

 

  • identifying and characterising commercial opportunities for sustainable solutions and services that leverage space assets, such as in satellite communications, satellite navigation and Earth observation, integrated with digital technologies;
  • engaging with private and public users as well as relevant stakeholders to identify commercial needs for new space-based downstream business applications and services. This task includes fostering collaboration with new user communities;
  • defining and developing initiatives in cooperation with strategic partners within the context of downstream space applications. These initiatives will support the creation of sustainable solutions and services aimed at addressing the identified opportunities;
  • supporting industry in developing proposals for new activities, including the selection process and the execution of quality control measures. This will be carried out through procurements and competitions;
  • managing industrial contracts, specifically those related to studies and demonstration projects, within your designated areas of responsibility;
  • conducting thorough analyses and assessments of the business, technical and regulatory risks associated with the development and operation of sustainable space-based solutions and services;
  • assisting in the preparation of work plans and reporting to delegate bodies;
  • drafting documentation for calls for proposals and tenders related to new initiatives;
  • coaching junior team members and overseeing the execution of tasks by contractors;
  • contributing to activities pursued in the context of cross-directorate initiatives.

Education

A master's degree in a relevant discipline, such as engineering or computer science is required for this post.
A master's degree in business administration or another business qualification would be a distinct advantage.

Additional requirements

You should possess a minimum of five years of professional experience in the space sector, with expertise in at least one of the following industry verticals: transportation and automotive, finance and insurance, real estate, retail, energy and utilities, agriculture and forestry, manufacturing and natural resources, health and social care, sports, media, communications and entertainment.

 

You should also demonstrate proficiency in various technologies, including:

  • The Internet of Things
  • Secure communications
  • Cutting-edge technologies such as blockchain and AR/VR
  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning
  • Big data analytics, as well as other emerging digital transformation trends

 

Additionally, you should possess a solid background in data analysis, the formulation of key performance indicators and the identification of user requirements.

Moreover, you should have a proven track record in drafting official documents, tender proposals and reports tailored for board meetings. This combination of industry knowledge, technological expertise and documentation skills is essential for success in this role.

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.

In principle, recruitment will be within the advertised grade band (A2-A4). However, if the selected candidate has less than four years of relevant professional experience following the completion of the master’s degree, the position may be filled at A1 level.
