Organizational Setting
The Office of Communications (OCC) is responsible for all corporate and internal communication activities of the Organization. It ensures coherence and consistency in FAO's corporate messaging and communications' outputs, as well as enables cost-effectiveness in use of communication-related resources across the Organization.

The post is located in the Digital and Multimedia branch (OCCI) of the Office of Communications (OCC) at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.

Reporting Lines
The Communication Officer (Photo Editor) reports to the Communication Officer (Multimedia), OCC.

Technical Focus
The Communication Officer (Photo Editor) is the steward of FAO's global photographic collection and works to build a compelling and curated selection of high-quality photographic content to showcase FAO's work and reinforce its advocacy. He/she oversees the use and preservation of the historical and current photo archive and library. The position includes oversight of the FAO Digital Media Hub, a new digital asset management system which federates, catalogues and redistributes FAO multimedia content - video and audio, in addition to photo - to internal and external audiences around the world. The job function is part of the Multimedia pillar (in the Digital and Multimedia branch (OCCI) of OCC), which works together with other communications colleagues to ensure FAO messaging and advocacy are delivered with maximum impact.

Key Results
Support comprehensive management of the global photo library and archives. Guidance for photo production to ensure it serves as a valuable resource for FAO teams. Promotion and dissemination of audiovisual material which helps to increase FAO's visibility, advance its advocacy and mobilize support for its beneficiaries. Safeguarding and promotion of historic audiovisual material. Contribution to the development and strengthening of FAO's external and internal communications through capacity-building, training and support for photo production and multimedia digital asset management at all levels of the Organization.

Key Functions
• Researches and analyses technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional and technology-related information, data and statistics and/or related policy issues to support internal and/or external communication.
• Produces a variety of information and reports as well as input for communication-related documents and web pages.
• Collaborates in the development of improved/updated tools, systems, processes and databases.
• Participates in multidisciplinary teams and/or leads working groups/teams.
• Collaborates with other divisions and agencies on work groups and committees and promotes best practices.
• Promotes knowledge sharing and best practices at international meetings and conferences and influences partners in stakeholder consultations.

Specific Functions
• Oversees the Photo Unit and the FAO Digital Media Hub team, by providing capacity-building to ensure that high-quality standards are maintained for FAO's global audiovisual collection, issuing clear assignments of work and responsibilities, managing performance, and mentoring.
• Sets and upholds standards for quality, timeliness and relevance of FAO's corporate photo collections, through the development of guidelines and quality-assurance workflows.
• Commissions and oversees photo production for corporate, field and creative projects, in coordination with relevant FAO or partner teams, driving the development of creative communications projects, including media partnerships, the use of photography to support the communications objectives of FAO.
• Sets standards for, and advises commissioning teams on, photographic missions and coverage, from the planning stage to production, post-production and distribution.
• Supports the development and implementation of strategic plans for audiovisual content production within OCCI and across FAO, by liaising with FAO staff across various teams to identify photo coverage needs, budgets, timelines and deliverables.

• Develops and maintains a network of professional photographers based around the world to meet FAO's photography needs, assisting with the management of contracts with external vendors.
• Ensures consistent highest quality standards of images and associated information (captions and related texts, keywords, credits and copyright notices, relevant terms of usage or other restrictions) to meet the needs of the Organization.
• Builds FAO's communications capacity by increasing the scope and usability of 'FAO's digital assets through the new FAO Digital Media Hub, promoting the production and use of media assets that meet 'professional standards.
• Ensures the proper management of photo archives and the proper safekeeping and preservation of historical photo materials.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements
• Advanced university degree in communication, communication technology, journalism, photography, visual arts or related field.
• Five years of relevant experience in communication, news or journalism environment and/or social media networks.
• Working knowledge (proficient – level C) in English and limited knowledge (intermediate – level B) of another official FAO language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).

• Extent and relevance of experience in leading technical communications teams.
• Extent and relevance of experience in the field of communication services for prominent organizations, particularly at the international level, including experience in news, journalism and storytelling for institutions.
• Extent and relevance of experience in producing high-quality digital and multimedia materials for audiences across digital and social media networks.
• Extent and relevance of experience in photography including planning, production and editing in various organizational setting.
• Extent and relevance of experience producing and distributing content for traditional media as well as digital and social media spaces.
• Extent and relevance of experience in working with a high-quality digital asset management (DAM) system.
• Proven ability to conceptualize and create audiovisual content projects to support corporate strategy.
• Proven ability to commission, encourage and guide creative collaborations leading to storytelling and content that will further FAO's communications objectives.
• Understanding of copyright standards, intellectual property rights and their application for content distribution.
• Proven ability to develop and implement capacity-building programmes and provide training on strategic content production.
• Understanding of FAO policies and programmes is desirable.
• Work experience developing communications to support international development, humanitarian action and positive social change is desirable.
• Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions.
