This position is based at European Space Security and Education Centre (ESEC - Galaxia) - Transinne, Belgium

 

In consideration of the geographical location of ESEC-Galaxia, successful applicants are recommended to have or obtain a driving license prior to the take up of duties.

 

The intern positions concern the ESA Education programme, in particular the STEM Learning and Inspiration programme targeting 3-18 years-old youngsters, directly or through their teachers and educators:

 

Learn with Space, initiatives to support educators from formal and non-formal education venues, starting from early-ages up to upper secondary age-groups, such as professional educator training, didactics resources, interdisciplinary school projects, thematic workshops and hackathons, and an international community of practice. Such activities are implemented at national level through the ESA ESERO project (www.esa.int/esero), a network of dedicated national offices and consortia of partners established by ESA in its Member and Associate States.

 

Let Space Inspire You, inspirational events, role modelling, career awareness initiatives, and access to space experts for youth and their families to be attracted to space and STEM, and understand their importance for society and economy. In doing so, help to break diversity barriers, boost accessibility, and promote sustainability for a better future.

 

The communication and promotion activities of the ESA Education programme at large, such as web, social media, Education web TV and goodie production, also fall under the STEM Learning and Inspiration programme.

Field(s) of activity for the internship

 

You can choose between the following topics:

 

1) Topic 1: Communication and Online Publication in STEM education internship


As an intern, you will build experience in either one or both of the following areas:

 

A) User Experience/Interface (UX/UI) and Publications. You will assist in the web developments of ESA Education programme initiatives, such as: 

  • Updating the ESA Education school projects’ online platforms
  • Maintaining up to date the database of educational resources and translations of such platforms
  • Front-end developments towards user experience optimization


B) Communications products and strategy. You will assist with:

  • The creation of diverse communication and outreach products focused on Space Careers
  • The support of other communications initiatives such as editing articles, website content or social media posts.

2) Topic 2: STEM Education Didactics

 

As an intern, you will build experience in either one or both of the following areas:

 

A)In the field of early-age education science didactics:

  • Contributing to the creation of the new early-age education didactics portfolio related to sciences
  • Categorizing the existing early-age resources within the ESA-ESERO network and adapting some of the current activities to be accessible by early-age pupils
  • Supporting the implementation of early-age teacher/educator training

 

B) In the field of school-level STEM education didactics:

  • Writing video message scripts and develop physical video demonstrations (e.g but not limited to, for ESA astronaut missions on the International Space Station, or ISS) for STEM education and/or educational promotion purposes
  • Updating the existing set of STEM didactics resources (including but not limited to the Mission X train like an astronaut didactics resources)
  • Supporting the long-term archival process of educational experiment results data generated from education operations on board the ISS
  • Other STEM didactics-related tasks

3) Topic 3: STEM Educational Research and Data Analysis internship

 

As an intern, you will build experience in:

  • Statistical analysis of participation in ESA Education projects and activities: You will analyze indicators in datasets to identify certain trends in participation/social media views and will contribute to assess the impact, trends and needs of the ESA Education STEM portfolio.
  • Educational trends research and benchmarking: You will be requested to review relevant education literature and provide a summary/synthesis of approaches and practices that could be applied and/or implemented in the STEM Education portfolio of activities.

Education

You must have student status and be enrolled at university for the entire duration of the internship. You should preferably be in your final or second to last year of a university course at master’s level in a technical or scientific discipline.

Additional requirements

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.

 2) Topic 2: 
  Knowledge of and experience in any of the following areas is a major asset:

  • STEM subject knowledge and/or STEM education 
  • Early age education
  • Inquiry-based learning didactics methodology
  • knowledge of Python coding and the Debian Linux OS 
  • Knowledge of Adobe InDesign

 

3) Topic 3: 
  Knowledge of and experience in any of the following areas is a major asset: 

  • STEM subject knowledge and/or STEM education 
  • Educational Research
  • Data analysis
  • Use of statistical tools (e.g. Excel)
