Overview

Jhpiego is seeking a dynamic and seasoned leader to drive operational excellence within the HealthTech Hub Africa. The Director will ensure successful implementation of the program’s mission of driving the development of health technologies in Africa and fast-tracking innovation in public health systems through collaboration with government partners.

This is a one-year contract position contingent upon successful securing of funding, with possibility of contract extension.

Rwandan nationals are strongly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Program Management

Oversee and manage the day-to-day operations of the HTHA – including any partners and suppliers – ensuring that it runs efficiently and effectively in achieving its objectives and is agile and responsive to accommodate future growth.

  • Enterprise Engagement

 Foster relationships with health tech enterprises across Africa and coordinate their enrollment into the HTHA accelerator program. Oversee the HTHA’s individual and cohort-based support to enterprises, ensuring that it delivers relevant and best-in-class expertise and networking opportunities to participating enterprises.

  • Innovation Challenge Coordination

Oversee the planning and execution of innovation challenges to source cutting-edge health tech solutions from entrepreneurs and startups. Ensure that challenges are co-created with governments and funders to respond to national and regional health priorities.

  • Fundraising and Partnerships

 Collaborate with and expand the HTHA partner network – including anchor partners (The Novartis Foundation, The Global Fund, Patrick J. McGovern Foundation), investor partners, support partners and government champions – seeking opportunities to attract additional funding and strategic partnerships to support the HTHA's expansion and sustainability.

  • Government Collaboration

 Oversee HTHA’s work with African governments to align health tech innovations with national priorities. Ensure strong continued leadership of a pan-African Inter-governmental Working Group and dissemination of a Policy Blueprint supporting an enabling environment for adoption and scale-up of health tech innovation within the public sector.

  • Team Leadership

Lead and inspire up to 3 direct reports, ensuring they are well-equipped and motivated to carry out their roles effectively. Work effectively with a distributed network of technical experts, mentors, and advisors.

  • Steering Committee Engagement

Collaborate with the HTHA Steering Committee to provide updates on program progress, seek input, and incorporate valuable insights into the HTHA's strategy.

  • Monitoring and Evaluation

 Oversee the tracking and evaluation of program outcomes and impact, ensuring continuous improvement and learning from HTHA's initiatives.

  • Communication and Advocacy

Represent HTHA in various forums, conferences, and events to advocate for health tech innovation and its impact on improving healthcare in Africa.

  • Budget Management

Manage HTHA's budget, ensuring resources are allocated appropriately to achieve program goals.

  • Reporting and Documentation

Prepare regular reports for stakeholders, detailing progress, achievements, challenges, and recommended actions to further enhance the accelerator's success.

  • Risk Management

 Identify and address potential risks and challenges, implementing mitigation strategies to ensure the smooth operation of HTHA.

  • Growth and development

 Identify opportunities to enhance the skills and capacities of HTHA's team and enterprises, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

Required Qualifications

  • Educational Background: A relevant bachelor's or master's degree in business administration, public health, technology, innovation management, or a related field.
  • Program Management: Proven ability to manage a complex, fast-paced program with multiple tasks and short deadlines, harnessing agile methodologies and adaptive management practices.
  • Experience in Health Tech Innovation: Significant experience (7+ years) in the tech or healthcare industry, with a focus on innovation, entrepreneurship, or technology solutions.
  • Entrepreneurial and Results-oriented Mindset: Previous experience as a visionary leader who can think creatively, spot opportunities, and drive innovation within the health tech space.
  • Leadership and Accountability: Experience leading as a team player, mentor and manager, demanding top performance from self and in partnership with the entire team
  • Networking and Communication: Exceptional networking and communication skills, experience representing HTHA in diverse forums and advocating for health tech innovation. Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively convey complex ideas and concepts to various audiences. English fluency required; fluency in French, Portuguese or other official African languages preferred.
  • Business Acumen: Strong experience and understanding of business principles, financial modeling, and investment strategies to guide enterprises in scaling their operations, build investor relationships and support sustainability planning for HTHA.
  • Strategic Planning: Ability and experience developing and executing long-term strategies that align with program’s objectives and contribute to its growth and sustainability.
  • Partnership Building: Experienced and skilled in cultivating and maintaining relationships with stakeholders, including donors, government officials, industry partners, investors, and other relevant organizations.
  • Data Analysis and Decision Making: Proficient in data-driven decision-making. Experienced and skilled in using metrics to evaluate program outcomes and make informed choices.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Adept at working with diverse teams and understanding the cultural context of the African health tech landscape.
  • Problem-Solving: Capable and experienced identifying challenges, proposing effective solutions, and overcoming obstacles to ensure the smooth operation of HTHA.
  • Passion for Impact: A genuine commitment to improving healthcare in Africa through health tech innovation
  • Ability to travel internationally to project sites

 

Location: The Director and essential team personnel are expected to be physically located at the HTHA in Kigali, Rwanda, with some travel within Africa and internationally.
