Overview

The Director, Special Events & Board Relations will establish goals, priorities and key metrics for a significant fundraising portfolio including the oversight and management of high profile events, trips and board relationships, ensuring successful engagements that generate substantial revenue for the organization. This role is accountable for overall success of the portfolio including budget plans aligned with department and organizational goals, exercising independent decision making within.

This role is accountable for the successful planning, implementation and management of the Laughter is the Best Medicine gala. This role serves as the key link in the continued growth and engagement of Advisory Board members, moving them towards major gift commitments.

Serving as a strategic thought partner, the Director Special Events & Board Relations works in alignment with the Vice President of Global Engagement and Communications, to identify, strategize, cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of major gift prospects. The Director, Special Events & Board Relations is a member of Jhpiego’s fundraising team and supports the fundraising activities conducted by their colleagues.

Responsibilities

Fundraising

  • Directs fundraising activities for a major portfolio of prospects and donors nationally with the goal to personally solicit, or arrange for solicitation.
  • Designs and delivers on major proposals by conducting active outreach, sending solicitation letters, and other cultivation and informational material for prospects and donors.
  • Cultivates, stewards and grows the donor pipeline.
  • Organizes and manages fundraising/friendraising efforts like Parties with a Purpose in conjunction with event hosts, usually Advisory Board members or other donors of Jhpiego.

Board Relations

  • Serves as the lead contact for advisory board members nationwide.
  • Oversees preparations for Advisory Board meeting: logistics, agenda, guest speakers, and dinner.

Jhpiego Gala

 

Working in close partnership with Leadership and the Executive Office,  oversees and manages Jhpiego’s biggest fundraising event, Laughter is the Best Medicine gala start to finish including:

  • Establishes and owns budget of $250k - $300k
  • Independently establishes financial targets for the gala
  • Makes critical financial decisions balancing event design, expenses, and fundraising goals to achieve the maximum fundraising results for the gala.
  • In conjunction with the Vice President of Global Engagement, Executive Office, Communications Team and the advisory board chair, identifies the individuals to be considered as the gala event honoree and/or award recipients.
  • Establishes event strategies, plans, timeline and calendar to serve as the guide post for all internal and volunteer efforts (e.g., host committee) and their roles and responsibilities
  • Works with the event honorees, hosts and/or award recipients to secure
  • corporate sponsorships and a personal distribution list of VIP guests.
  • Sources, reviews and selects peakers or special guests.
  • Develops and implements follow up engagement strategies with newly or highly engaged participants.
  • Coordinates volunteer recruitment, training (e.g., event registration).
  • Oversees the promotional activities of the event by developing a communications plan, inclusive of social media outreach.

VIP Trips

  • Working with the Vice President of Global Engagement and Communications and other relevant stakeholders, develops a sustainable, multi-year VIP trip program to accommodate asks with high efficiency for both US-based and country-host staff.
  • In collaboration with Jhpiego leadership and in-country program teams, design VIP donor experience trips with goal of cultivating major gift donors and deepening engagement with Jhpiego’s mission and track trip budgets.
  • Serves as point person for communications with VIP traveler(s), providing continuity and stability from their departure city through their experience in-country.
  • In partnership with Baltimore and country-based communications teams, develop a communications plan that meets the needs of all stakeholders.
  • Conducts post-trip cultivation and preparation for a major gift ask.

Supervision

  • Provides coaching, guidance and mentorship to direct report(s) where needed
  • Sets targets and objectives for assigned area and delivers results
  • Grows team expertise to align with program and organizational direction while continually looking for ways to provide / enhance the value delivered
  • Leads a high-performing team and provides ongoing feedback and performance reviews
  • Tracks, monitors and effectively addresses and / or rewards performance of team members
  • Manages employees in compliance with all HR policies, procedures, guidelines
  • Shares knowledge, information, skills and subject matter expertise among the team and ensures the timely communication of issues while encouraging good working relationships with other functions / teams
  • Recruits for all hires to ensure a highly diverse, qualified workforce with the necessary capabilities needed to achieve goals

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field with 10-12 years of relevant experience, with a track record of securing five and six figure gifts.
  • Required experience inclusive of 6 years experience in event management
  • Highly motivated and proactive; independent self-starter and an entrepreneur who can work with little direction and with a “lean” staff.
  • Detailed oriented, with the ability to multitask and run a best-in-class event.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Professional demeanor, with abilities to keep information confidential and interact with varying levels of leadership across the organization.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft applications.
  • Experience with donor software systems (Raiser’s Edge).
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends with 35% travel to donors’ homes, event destinations, Jhpiego’s headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland, and international travel as needed to support VIP trip experiences.
  • Ability to travel up to 30% of the time

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in a relevant field

      The salary range for this role is expected to be: $118,619 - $158,158.
